The sealing lip of the spout neck and the circular vent of the cap align so as to vent the bottle when the cap is turned to a second position.

Two Stage Dispensing Cap For Pressurized Containers

View page
US Patent:
6484895, Nov 26, 2002
Filed:
May 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/860895
Inventors:
Gary V. Montgomery - Evansville IN
Joseph M. Ladina - Marietta GA
Assignee:
The Coca-Cola Company - Atlanta GA
Rexam Medical Packaging Inc. - Evansville IN
International Classification:
B65D 4708
US Classification:
215237, 215303, 215307, 220263, 220835, 222556
Abstract:
A two stage dispensing cap for a carbonated beverage container is described. The cap has a flip top which is hingedly connected to a collar wherein the collar is rotatable on the container. The cap, upon rotation of the collar, is first opened into a venting position wherein the flip top vents the pressurized contents of the container but remains locked partially closed. Continued rotation of the cap releases the locked flop top to allow the container to be fully opened. A set of cams on the container neck work in conjunction with annular beads to first allow partially opening of the flip top into the venting position and then allowing it to fully open.

Cam Follower Closure On Container With Cam Track Finish

View page
US Patent:
54621860, Oct 31, 1995
Filed:
Aug 2, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/284143
Inventors:
Joseph M. Ladina - Marietta GA
Timothy R. Exley - Stone Mountain GA
William A. Szedon - Stone Mountain GA
Assignee:
The Coca Cola Company - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B65D 4104
B65D 5502
US Classification:
215330
Abstract:
A mating closure and finish system particularly adapted for use with containers, e. g. bottles containing carbonated beverages which generate gas in the bottle headspace and where the bottle finish incorporates at least two equally spaced helical cam tracks. The closure is comprised of plural sets of cam followers which fit into the cam tracks and where the cooperation between the cam tracks and cam followers produces an axial movement of the closure as it is rotated on the finish. For a two track system, which is the preferred embodiment, each track starts 180. degree. from each other and makes at least one full turn around the circumference of the finish. Also included are intervening stops and tapered speed bumps that contact and impede the cam follower(s) in the cam tracks during closure removal to effect a delay. Raised thread segments which define the cam tracks are intersected by a plurality of vertical venting slots or pathways along their helical length to vent headspace gas. Longitudinally extending grooves are located in raised thread segments on either side of the cam tracks and couple with the vertical venting slots to provide a continuous venting conduit of the headspace gas.

Closure Having Self-Venting, Sealed Promotion Compartment

US Patent:
58199764, Oct 13, 1998
Filed:
Nov 15, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/746710
Inventors:
Ted W. Boehm - Crawfordsville IN
David L. Cerny - Crawfordsville IN
Wendell D. Willingham - Zionsville IN
Daniel J. Denman - Crawfordsville IN
Sheldon L. Wilde - Indianapolis IN
Stephen W. McBride - Brownsburg IN
Hugh C. Urmston - Carmel IN
Ralph H. Whitney - Venice FL
David E. Babcock - Lafayette IN
Joseph M. Ladina - Marietta GA
Assignee:
Alcoa Closure Systems International - Crawfordsville IN
International Classification:
B65D 110
US Classification:
220522
Abstract:
A promotional closure includes a sealed promotion-receiving member in the form of a compartment positioned generally within an outer closure cap, for disposition within an associated container. The sealed configuration of the promotion compartment desirably acts to isolate the promotional element therein from the contents of the container. Use on a container having carbonated contents is particularly facilitated by an arrangement by which a plastic film cover member which seals the compartment is sealed to an annular flange of the compartment to permit predetermined delamination and release of gas pressure from within the interior of the compartment.
