Cylinder Deactivation System And Nox Trap Regeneration

View page
US Patent:
6732506, May 11, 2004
Filed:
Apr 3, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/116457
Inventors:
Gary J. Patterson - Utica MI
Alan William Hayman - Romeo MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F01N 300
US Classification:
60285, 60274, 60295, 123198 F
Abstract:
An engine control system in a vehicle including a variable displacement internal combustion engine, a controller for controlling the displacement of the variable displacement internal combustion engine, an exhaust manifold coupled to the variable displacement internal combustion engine, a NOx trap coupled to the exhaust manifold, and where the controller varies the displacement of the variable displacement internal combustion engine to optimize the regeneration of the NOx trap.

Engine Operating Method And Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
6915775, Jul 12, 2005
Filed:
Sep 26, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/672952
Inventors:
Gary J. Patterson - Utica MI, US
Alan W. Hayman - Romeo MI, US
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F01L001/34
US Classification:
123198F, 123198 DB, 123 9016
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine includes a plurality of cylinders each having intake and exhaust valves and at least one camshaft timed to operate the valves with a high performance fixed overlap. Each camshaft has a cam phaser controlled to equally vary the intake and exhaust valve timing for superior full throttle performance over the engine speed range; Valve deactivation mechanisms operate to deactivate up to half the cylinders during idle and light load operation for increasing fuel efficiency and emission control and maintaining stable operation of the operating cylinders. The engine may also be started with half the cylinders cut out and then run with stable operation in this mode during idle and light load because the increased load on the operating cylinders gives stable operation with an increased valve overlap permitting increased performance and emission control at higher load operation on all the cylinders.

Controlling Engine Charge Dilution For Fuel Efficiency

View page
US Patent:
6928982, Aug 16, 2005
Filed:
Jan 28, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/766156
Inventors:
William C. Albertson - Clinton Township MI, US
Gary J. Patterson - Utica MI, US
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02M025/07
F02D011/10
US Classification:
123399, 12356821, 123198 F
Abstract:
Fuel consumption in a vehicle engine is reduced by varying charge dilution in an intake manifold of the engine to maintain a pressure in the intake manifold within a predetermined range. Pumping work performed by engine cylinders is reduced, which reduces fuel consumption.

High Overlap Camshaft For Improved Engine Efficiency

View page
US Patent:
7530337, May 12, 2009
Filed:
Apr 15, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/103304
Inventors:
Richard Stephen Davis - Lake Orion MI, US
Ronald J. Herrin - Troy MI, US
Gary J. Patterson - Utica MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations, Inc. - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F01L 1/00
US Classification:
123 901, 123321
Abstract:
A vehicle may include a drive axle, an engine assembly, a coupling device, and an engine load management system. The engine assembly may include a valvetrain including a fixed-lobe camshaft and intake and exhaust valves supported by the engine assembly. The fixed-lobe camshaft may include a first lobe engaged with the intake valve to open the intake valve and a second lobe engaged with the exhaust valve to open the exhaust valve. The first and second lobes may be fixed relative to one another to define a constant valve overlap condition that provides for opening of the intake valve before the exhaust valve is fully closed, creating an engine operating condition that results in combustion instability below an engine load limit. The engine load management system may be in communication with the engine to prevent engine operation below the engine load limit.

Modular Protection System For Critical Assets And Infrastructure

View page
US Patent:
20180030755, Feb 1, 2018
Filed:
Sep 25, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/714577
Inventors:
Gary Patterson - Lake Orion MI, US
Tony Mcginnis - Lyon Township MI, US
International Classification:
E04H 17/16
F41H 5/24
E04H 9/10
E04H 17/20
E06B 11/04
Abstract:
A modular system for protecting a critical asset includes a plurality of vertical members extending vertically upwardly from a ground surface, and inner and outer stacks of spaced-apart horizontal members connected between adjacent pairs of the vertical members defining a vertical wall. The spaced-apart horizontal members have cross sections and spacings such that no line can be drawn through the wall without intersecting with one or both of the inner and outer stacks. The cross sections of the horizontal members in both stacks include elongated angled surfaces such that projectile on a trajectory toward the critical asset is deflected upwardly or downwardly and away from the critical asset. In a preferred embodiment, the horizontal members are angle irons. In a more preferred embodiment the horizontal members are 1/2″ 90-degree steel angle irons oriented sideways, such that the elongated plates making up the angle irons are 45 degrees off horizontal.
