Countergravity Casting Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
48259330, May 2, 1989
Filed:
Jun 24, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/211024
Inventors:
Karl D. Voss - Standish MI
James B. Mercer - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B22D 1806
US Classification:
164255
Abstract:
Apparatus for the vacuum countergravity casting of metal in shell molds including a gas-permeable upper shell mold portion secured to a bottom mold portion and together secured to the mouth of a vacuum box by a plurality of threadable mounting sites engaged by self-tapping threads on the ends of rotatable shafts reciprocally slidable through the ceiling of the box. Each shaft has a stop fixed thereto at a predetermined distance above the threads for pressing the upper shell mold portion into sealing engagement with the bottom mold portion in order to eliminate the need to glue the upper and lower mold portions together.

Vacuum Countergravity Casting Apparatus And Method With Backflow Valve

View page
US Patent:
48629456, Sep 5, 1989
Filed:
Aug 30, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/238203
Inventors:
Anthony C. Greanias - Saginaw MI
James B. Mercer - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B22D 1806
US Classification:
164 63
Abstract:
An apparatus for the vacuum, countergravity casting of molten metal includes a bottom drag member and a casting mold member thereon engaged together at a parting plane. A valve member is disposed adjacent the parting plane in an ingate to a mold cavity formed at least in part in the casting mold member and is movable between a valve seat on the bottom drag member and a stop surface on the casting mold member to permit filling of the mold cavity in countergravity manner from an underlying molten metal pool when the bottom drag member is immersed therein and to prevent backflow of the molten metal from the mold cavity when the bottom drag member is withdrawn from the pool after mold filling and before solidification of the molten metal in the mold cavity.

Vacuum-Assisted Counter Gravity Casting Apparatus With Valve To Prevent Flow Of Melt From Mold

View page
US Patent:
50885464, Feb 18, 1992
Filed:
Aug 19, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/749626
Inventors:
Anthony C. Greanias - Saginaw MI
John G. Kubisch - Midland MI
James B. Mercer - Saginaw MI
Wilmer G. Schaeff - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B22D 1806
US Classification:
164255
Abstract:
Casting apparatus for the vacuum-assisted, countergravity casting of a melt comprises a porous, gas permeable casting mold including a mold cavity and a melt inlet communicating the mold cavity to a lower mold portion adapted to engage an underlying source of melt and a vacuum box defining a vacuum chamber confronting the casting mold for evacuating the mold cavity when the lower mold portion and the underlying source of the melt are engaged. A valve member is disposed on the mold in an open position relative to the melt inlet to permit the melt to be drawn upwardly therethrough into the mold cavity when the lower mold portion and the source are engaged with the mold cavity evacuated and is movable to a closed position relative to the melt inlet after the mold cavity is filled with the melt to close off the melt inlet to prevent the melt from flowing out of the mold cavity when the lower mold portion and the source are subsequently disengaged. The valve member is movable from the open position to the closed position by a valve moving mechanism carried on the vacuum box. The mold is engaged with the melt source only long enough to fill the mold cavity with the melt to thereby provide a significant reduction in the overall casting cycle time.

Countergravity Casting Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
50624660, Nov 5, 1991
Filed:
May 10, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/698560
Inventors:
John G. Kubisch - Midland MI
James B. Mercer - Saginaw MI
Wilmer G. Schaeff - Saginaw MI
Thomas E. Wenzel - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B22D 1806
US Classification:
164 71
Abstract:
In vacuum countergravity casting a melt into a mold sealingly engaged to a vacuum container by an elastomeric sealing gasket, the sealing gasket is isolated from the heat of an underlying source of the melt and from contact therewith during casting by substantially binderless refractory particulates, such as loose foundry sand, held in a particulate-receiving space in the container about a lower, melt-engaging portion of the mold by a negative differential pressure established between the inside and outside of the particulate-receiving space.

Gregory A. Schaffer - Saginaw MI
James B. Mercer - Saginaw MI
Karl D. Voss - Saginaw MI
James Smith - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B22D 1806
US Classification:
164255
Abstract:
Apparatus for the vacuum, countergravity casting of metal in shell molds including a gas permeable shell mold secured to the mouth of a vacuum box by a plurality of keepers on the ends of rotatable shafts reciprocably slidable through the ceiling of the vacuum box, which keepers are adapted for insertion into and rotation within an anchoring cavity in the mold such that the keeper engages a portion of the mold overhanging the cavity to secure the mold to the box.
