Circuit, System, And Method For Preventing A Communication System Absent A Dedicated Clocking Master From Producing A Clocking Frequency Outside An Acceptable Range

View page
US Patent:
7609797, Oct 27, 2009
Filed:
Sep 4, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/655265
Inventors:
David J. Knapp - Austin TX, US
Jason E. Lewis - Driftwood TX, US
Assignee:
Standard Microsystems Corporation - Hauppauge NY
International Classification:
H04L 7/00
H03D 3/24
US Classification:
375357, 375376
Abstract:
A communication system, clock recovery circuit, and method are provided for allowing data to be transmitted across a communication system and between clock recovery circuits absent a clock master specifically designed for one node of the communication system. Absent a clock master, the communication system is permitted to enter into an all slave mode, with periodic unlock conditions possibly rotating about the communication system ring topology. However, the unlock condition can be readily detected and if the received data bitstream formed into a recovered clock exceeds a threshold above or is less than a threshold below a reference clock generated during instances of unlock, then the clock recovery circuit will fix the synchronizing clock to the reference clock, and cause the bitstream to resynchronize to the reference clock before the reference clock is again disabled to allow the communication system to re-enter the all slave and rotating unlock condition. Periodic application of a reference clock interspersed with periodic application of a clock having transitions equal to the incoming bitstream proves advantageous in avoiding a design where a dedicated master must be used within a specified communication system node.

System And Method For Transferring Data Among Transceivers Substantially Void Of Data Dependent Jitter

View page
US Patent:
7664214, Feb 16, 2010
Filed:
Sep 24, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/253681
Inventors:
David J. Knapp - Austin TX, US
Jason E. Lewis - Driftwood TX, US
Assignee:
Standard Microsystems Corporation - Hauppauge NY
International Classification:
H04L 7/00
US Classification:
375355, 375316, 375354, 375360, 375363, 375364, 375365, 375366, 375371, 375376
Abstract:
A communication system, clock generation circuit, and method are provided for receiving jitter upon data and to generate a clock reference that does not contain the received jitter. The clock reference can be used either by a digital subsystem of a communication system node, or can be transmitted as substantially jitter-free data from that node to a downstream node of the communication system. Instead of recovering the clock reference from the data having jitter, a pattern is regularly defined within the data stream preferably at periodic, timed intervals. The data pattern may be made up of a series of non-transitions which, regardless of any jitter in the data itself, does not impute any jitter onto a phase-locked loop triggered from an edge of the non-transitioning data pattern. Using the edge as a reference point, a jitter-free clocking signal can be derived at the same frequency as a clocking signal which would normally be produced from the jitter-induced data.

Lighting Control System

US Patent:
20120001567, Jan 5, 2012
Filed:
Sep 13, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/231077
Inventors:
David J. Knapp - Austin TX, US
Horace C. Ho - Austin TX, US
Jason Lewis - Driftwood TX, US
Assignee:
FIREFLY GREEN TECHNOLOGIES, INC. - Austin TX
International Classification:
H05B 37/02
US Classification:
315291
Abstract:
Intelligent illumination device are disclosed that use components in an LED light to perform one or more of a wide variety of desirable lighting functions for very low cost. The LEDs that produce light can be periodically turned off momentarily, for example, for a duration that the human eye cannot perceive, in order for the light to receive commands optically. The optically transmitted commands can be sent to the light, for example, using a remove control device. The illumination device can use the LEDs that are currently off to receive the data and then configure the light accordingly, or to measure light. Such light can be ambient light for a photosensor function, or light from other LEDs in the illumination device to adjust the color mix.

H05B 47/24
H05B 47/21
G01J 1/32
G01J 1/42
G01R 31/44
Abstract:
An illumination device and method is provided herein for calibrating individual LEDs in the illumination device, so as to obtain a desired luminous flux and a desired chromaticity of the device over changes in drive current, temperature, and over time as the LEDs age. The calibration method may include subjecting the illumination device to a first ambient temperature, successively applying at least three different drive currents to a first LED to produce illumination at three or more different levels of brightness, obtaining a plurality of optical measurements from the illumination produced by the first LED at each of the at least three different drive currents, obtaining a plurality of electrical measurements from the photodetector and storing results of the obtaining steps within the illumination device to calibrate the first LED at the first ambient temperature. The plurality of optical measurements may generally include luminous flux and chromaticity, the plurality of electrical measurements may generally include induced photocurrents and forward voltages, and the calibration method steps may be repeated for each LED included within the illumination device and upon subjecting the illumination device to a second ambient temperature.

Illumination System And Method That Presents A Natural Show To Emulate Daylight Conditions With Smoothing Dimcurve Modification Thereof

View page
US Patent:
20200281058, Sep 3, 2020
Filed:
Mar 9, 2020
Appl. No.:
16/812949
Inventors:
- Coopersburg PA, US
Horace C. Ho - Austin TX, US
Rebecca Frank - Austin TX, US
Jason E. Lewis - Driftwood TX, US
Ryan Matthew Bocock - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Lutron Ketra, LLC - Coopersburg PA
International Classification:
H05B 45/20
H05B 45/10
H05B 47/16
H05B 47/19
H05B 47/105
Abstract:
An illumination system and method is provided for readily mapping a plurality of scenes along a dimcurve form a natural show for one or more groups of LED illumination devices. Mapping can be performed using a graphical user interface on a remote controller wirelessly linked to the illumination devices. A keypad is preferably configured for button control of changes to color temperature as a function of brightness along each of the various dimcurves for each of the various groups of illumination devices controlled by a corresponding keypad to allow momentary or persistent override and reprogram of the natural show. Modification to a scene further comprises modifications to scenes before and after the currently modified scene to provide a smoothing dimcurve modification. Global keypad can be used to control multiple zones arranged throughout a structure to switch between a natural show that emulates outdoor sunlight conditions to a panic show when an intruder is detected.

Illumination Device For Adjusting Color Temperature Based On Brightness And Time Of Day

View page
US Patent:
20190215927, Jul 11, 2019
Filed:
Mar 18, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/356896
Inventors:
- Coopersburg PA, US
Horace C. Ho - Austin TX, US
Rebecca Frank - Austin TX, US
Jason E. Lewis - Driftwood TX, US
Ryan Matthew Bocock - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Lutron Ketra, LLC - Coopersburg PA
International Classification:
H05B 33/08
Abstract:
An illumination device, system and method are provided herein for emulating sunlight along a daytime or nighttime locus. Sunlight is emulated depending on the path length of the sun relative to a structure containing the illumination device and system. One or more illumination devices can be grouped together and perform the sunlight emulation along the locus by producing different color temperatures throughout the day by all illumination devices within that group producing the same color temperature changes throughout the day. Moreover, a particular advantage of the preferred embodiments is the ability to manually change at any time the emulated natural sunlight output from the one or more groups of illumination devices and advantageously change the color output more so at certain times than at other times by simply actuating a trigger on a dimmer associated with a virtual or physical keypad.
