An iris dilator includes a body formed of an expansile material being expandable from a dehydrated first size and shape to a hydrated second size and shape. When hydrated, the dilator has a shape complementary to an inside diameter of the iris and a size sufficient to dilate the iris. In addition, a mammalian iris may be dilated by inserting the at least partially dehydrated iris dilator described above into a position radially inwardly from the iris where, in the presence of bodily or surgical fluids, the dilator hydrates and expands to engage and dilate the iris. An apparatus for deforming the dilator to facilitate insertion in use includes top and bottom surfaces which engage top and bottom sides of the dilator, respectively, at least one depression member for forming a depressed area on an edge of the dilator and at least one retainer member for retaining a non-depressed area on the edge of the dilator.

A microsurgical irrigation/aspiration system is provided, including a controller having a pump roller head, actuators for occluding tubing, a suction sensor, and apparatus for mounting a pump cassette. The system cassette is suitable for mounting on the controller and has an opening with a pump tubing segment passing along an arcuate wall of the opening. When the cassette is mounted on the console, the roller head is engaged in the cassette opening and compresses the pump tubing segment against the arcuate wall. An infusion line passes through the cassette and is occludable by one of the actuators, and a vent line connected to the pump tubing segment is occludable by a second actuator. A suction sensing port on the cassette couples with the suction sensor in the controller.

A pump and a method for pumping liquid or fluid through a pair of resilient tubes includes a pushing mechanism which partially compresses the tubes in a balanced, alternating, rocking manner. The resilient tubes are held in a parallel relationship. The pushing mechanism alternately compresses the tubes. As one of the two parallel tubes is compressed, fluid is pumped out of the tube and at the same time fluid is drawn into the second tube as the latter tube resumes its original shape. The resilience of both tubes also is used to assist the pumping action in a balanced fashion, thereby providing a pump that has low power consumption and is lightweight.

A microsurgery system comprising an instrument including a source of vacuum and control means, a remotely connected handpiece adapted to be disposed in the vicinity of the situs of the surgery and including an inlet and suction conduit means coupled to the inlet and to the vacuum source for carrying material away from the surgery situs. The system also includes a cassette assembly arranged for releasable securement to the instrument. The control means of the instrument includes an interrupter bar which cooperates with the cassette assembly for selectively isolating the vacuum source from the suction conduit means. The cassette assembly comprises a body portion, a collection vessel, a first port communicating with the suction conduit and a second port communicating with the vacuum source. Occludable conduit means are coupled between the first and second ports and are arranged to be engaged by the interrupter bar in response to a first signal to isolate the vacuum source from the suction means. The collection vessel is coupled to the suction conduit to collect the material extracted from the surgery situs.

A laser photo optic breakdown probe and handpiece system especially suited for small-incision cataract removal including an optical fiber through which a pulsed source of laser energy is delivered to a target spaced from the distal end of the fiber. The aspiration tube forms part of a handle assembly which is detachably coupled to the transfer housing.

The tissue contact member terminates in a tissue contact surface having a radius of curvature.
