US Patent:
6389059, May 14, 2002
Filed:
Mar 23, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/275067
Inventors:
Douglas G. Smith - Arlington VA
Robert C. Dixon - Palmer Lake CO
Jeffrey S. Vanderpool - Colorado Springs CO
Assignee:
Xircom Wireless, Inc. - Colorado Springs CO
International Classification:
H04K 100
US Classification:
375141
Abstract:
A technique for spread-spectrum communication which uses more than one mode and more than one frequency band. Selectable modes include narrowband mode and spread-spectrum mode, or cellular mode and microcellular mode. Selectable frequency bands include both licensed and unlicensed frequency bands, particularly frequency bands including the 902-928 MHz, 1850-1990 MHz, and 2. 4-2. 4835 GHz frequency bands. Spread-spectrum communication channels are 10 MHz or less in width. The frequency band onto which spread-spectrum signals are encoded may be changed upon a change in environment or other control trigger, such as establishment or de-establishment of communication with a private access network.

8/483514
Inventors:
Douglas G. Smith - Arlington VA
Robert C. Dixon - Palmer Lake CO

Omnipoint Corporation - Colorado Springs CO
International Classification:
H04K 100
H04L 2726
US Classification:
375200
A multi-band transmitter comprises a single frequency synthesizer and a frequency source (e. g. , a local oscillator), coupled to a selectable band pass filter.

Method Of Producing Population Inversion And Lasing At Short Wavelengths By Charge Transfer

View page
US Patent:
42019559, May 6, 1980
Filed:
Mar 22, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/889072
Inventors:
Raymond C. Elton - Potomac MD
Robert H. Dixon - Bowie MD
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
H01S 322
US Classification:
331 945G
Abstract:
A stimulated emission device operative in the ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions. A high-power infrared laser is focused on a slab target vaporizing the material and generating highly stripped target ions with varying velocities. Just prior to laser initiation, a gaseous environment of helium, hydrogen, argon or neon is injected to surround the target (e. g. , carbon) at a pressure of from 1-10 Torr. The injected gas and associated electrons modify and mix the interacting particles originating from the vaporized target. Ion-atom resonance, charge-transfer reactions take place to form excited-state ions to produce amplified stimulated emission in the 300-800 Angstrom region.

Spread Spectrum Communication System Using Dect Protocol

View page
US Patent:
62721216, Aug 7, 2001
Filed:
Mar 3, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/811108
Inventors:
Douglas G. Smith - Arlington VA
Robert C. Dixon - Palmer Lake CO
Assignee:
Omnipoint Corporation - Colorado Springs CO
International Classification:
H04B 7216
US Classification:
370342
Abstract:
A time division multiplexed wireless communication system using the DECT protocol with spread-spectrum modulation. The wireless communication system includes a spread-spectrum transmitter and receiver. The spread spectrum transmitter transmits using an M-ary spread spectrum transmission technique, sending a predefined chip code (symbol code) for each data symbol. The predefined chip codes used are relatively short, so that spread spectrum synchronization is accomplished within about a single data symbol transmission time, well within the constraints of the DECT timing structure. The spread spectrum signal may be transmitted over a bandwidth of under 20 MHz (e. g. , about 5 MHz) covering a plurality of DECT frequency channels, so as to be confined within, or overlapping with, the bandwidth of a DECT system, and so as to minimize interference with other users, if any, of the same frequency spectrum. A spread spectrum transmission in a DECT time slot may overlay one or more narrowband transmissions, or may overlay other spread spectrum transmissions. Code division multiplexing may also be used to allow multiple spread spectrum transmissions to be sent during a single DECT time slot.

Device For Cryogenically Fabricating Source Material For Plasma X-Ray Lasers

View page
US Patent:
45080550, Apr 2, 1985
Filed:
Jun 3, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/500725
Inventors:
Raymond C. Elton - Potomac MD
Robert H. Dixon - Bowie MD
James L. Ford - Upper Marlboro MD
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy - Washington DC
International Classification:
C23C 1308
US Classification:
118724
Abstract:
A device for fabricating a target of a lasing material and a pump material or lasing at X-ray wavelengths wherein one of the materials occurs naturally as a gas. A substrate of the other material is cooled below the freezing point of the one material occuring naturally as a gas. Then a gaseous atmosphere of the latter material is supplied to the cooled substrate so that a frozen layer of the latter material condenses onto the substrate to form the target.

Spread-Spectrum Data Publishing System

View page
US Patent:
61188247, Sep 12, 2000
Filed:
Apr 20, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/063639
Inventors:
Douglas G. Smith - Washington DC
Robert C. Dixon - Palmer Lake CO
Jeffrey S. Vanderpool - Colorado Springs CO
Assignee:
Omnipoint Corporation - Colorado Springs CO
International Classification:
H04L 1218
H04L 2700
H04L 2906
H04B 138
US Classification:
375259
Abstract:
A system for publishing data on shared broadcast channels using spread-spectrum techniques, which may comprise a spread-spectrum encoder capable of receiving data and placing it in a spread-spectrum signal format and a transmitter operating on a shared communication channel or frequency band, such as might be allocated to terrestrial point-to-point or broadcast communications. The shared communication channel may comprise a cellular system, in which data may be transmitted using spread-spectrum techniques using the transmitters and repeaters of the cellular system simultaneously with voice and other transmissions associated with the cellular system. A subscriber station may be capable of receiving using a plurality of different communication channels or frequency bands, such as a first receiver capable of cellular reception and a second receiver capable of satellite reception, at least one of which uses spread-spectrum techniques. The subscriber station may also comprise a transmitter using at least one communication channel or frequency band, so that the subscriber station may receive data or other transmissions using one channel and may request further data or other transmissions using a second channel.
