Transition Inserts And Methods For Joining Dissimilar Metals

View page
US Patent:
20050129971, Jun 16, 2005
Filed:
Dec 15, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/736022
Inventors:
Steven Ping - Pleasanton CA, US
Rick James - Spokane WA, US
International Classification:
B32B015/00
US Classification:
428615000, 428650000
Abstract:
Transition inserts and methods of joining two dissimilar metals are described. In one implementation a transition insert is described. The transition insert includes a first member comprising essentially steel, a second member comprising Al and between about 1.8% and 10.0% Si. The first member and the second member are joined to one another by roll bonding or explosion bonding. In another implementation the transition insert includes an interlayer which is joined to one of the first member or the second member. In this implementation the first member and the second member are joined to one another at the interlayer by the roll bonding or the explosion bonding. In another implementation, a method of joining two dissimilar metals is described. The method includes bonding a first member comprising essentially steel with a second member comprising Al and between about 1.8% and 10.0% Si.

Tape Cartridge Base Plate Comprising A Novel Aluminum Alloy

View page
US Patent:
55417973, Jul 30, 1996
Filed:
Oct 30, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/550182
Inventors:
Steven W. Ping - Pleasanton CA
Christopher J. Zwettler - Maplewood MN
Assignee:
Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
G11B 2302
US Classification:
360132
Abstract:
A tape cartridge comprising a flat base plate and component parts mounted on the plate, including pins that are nominally perpendicular to the base plate and which support and facilitate tape transfer within the cartridge; the plate comprising an aluminum alloy having a yield stress in the range from about 25,000 to 30,000 psi. The base plate preferably comprises from about 0. 5 to 3 parts by weight Si and from about 0. 1 to 0. 7 parts by weight Fe, based on 100 parts of the aluminum alloy. The base plate of the present invention may optionally comprise one or more of the following: up to about 1 part by weight Mn; up to about 2 parts by weight Mg; and mixtures thereof; based on 100 parts of the aluminum alloy.

Isostatic Compression Technique For Powder Metallurgy

View page
US Patent:
46157352, Oct 7, 1986
Filed:
Sep 18, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/651723
Inventors:
Steven W. Ping - Pleasanton CA
Assignee:
Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation - Oakland CA
International Classification:
C22C 100
US Classification:
75249
Abstract:
Powder metallurgy products of high tensile strength are formed in a pore-free state by a novel process which entirely avoids the use of canisters. An open-pore specimen is purged with depurative gas, backfilled with a reactive gas and, while still immersed in the reactive gas, compressed isostatically to an extent necessary to close the pores. The specimen may then be compressed to full density without the need for either high vacuum or a depurative or reactive gas atmosphere.
