Fast Suspend To Disk

View page
US Patent:
6546472, Apr 8, 2003
Filed:
Dec 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/751165
Inventors:
Lee W. Atkinson - Houston TX
Vu T. Nguyen - San Jose CA
Mark W. Peters - Santa Clara CA
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06F 1206
US Classification:
711156, 711162, 713320
Abstract:
A computer system supports a fast hibernation operation to save power, while minimizing the amount of time it takes to enter the hibernation mode, and to resume normal operations. The system periodically stores data from system memory to non-volatile memory, such as a hard disk drive, during normal operations when the system is idle. The system includes activity monitors that detect when the data in memory pages is changed. The system periodically sweeps the monitors, and performs save operations to the non-volatile memory. When the system enters hibernation mode, the system determines which memory pages have been changed since the last save operation, and then saves those pages to memory. As an alternative, the system immediately can enter hibernation by supplying power to the memory pages that have not been saved since the last save operation. To implement this, independent switches under the control of the CPU of memory controller selectively turn off power to unsaved memory pages. The system can also implement a fast resume procedure by restoring the memory pages that have the highest priority, and saving the other pages in the background, or as need by the system devices.

Article Trading Among Members Of A Community

View page
US Patent:
8521611, Aug 27, 2013
Filed:
Mar 6, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/682635
Inventors:
Vu Nguyen - Hillsborough CA, US
Anselm P. Baird-Smith - San Jose CA, US
William A. Alvarado - Menlo Park CA, US
John P. Cogan - Houston TX, US
Carole K. Alvarado - Menlo Park CA, US
Assignee:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
US Classification:
705 264, 705 2635, 705 37
Abstract:
Articles such as compact discs or electronic files are traded among a plurality of members who are registered in a common community. Each member has an account including a trading credit balance and a mailing address. A user interface is provided that allows a member to enter articles that the member owns and is willing to trade and articles that the member wants to own. The user interface also receives article trading instruction messages. An administration computer hosts the plurality of members and facilitates article trades among the members. The administration computer identifies matches between owned and wanted articles. A priority algorithm is used to select the member who will receive the article if there is more than one member who wants an article that another member owns and is willing to trade. The priority algorithm is based in part on a member score that is a function of the relative value of the articles that a member owns and sends to another member compared to the relative value of the articles that the member wants and receives from another member, the relative value of the articles being determined by a demand for the article compared to a supply for the article among the members.

Voice Messaging System, Method, And Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
20010033641, Oct 25, 2001
Filed:
Jan 17, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/764198
Inventors:
Vu Nguyen - San Francisco CA, US
International Classification:
H04M001/64
H04M011/00
US Classification:
379/088220, 379/088130
Abstract:
A voice messaging system and method are presented herein. A unique telephone number and extension are associated with each one of a plurality of subscribers. The telephone number is also associated with a remote access point of presence (RAPP). Messages are left for subscribers by establishing a phone call to the phone number associated therewith. The phone call is received with a RAPP. The RAPP receives the voice message, digitizes and packetizes the voice message, and transmits the message over a packet network to a store and forward messaging system. The store and forward messaging system stores the message for retrieval. The message can be retrieved by either telephone, a client computer, or a private branch exchange terminal.

Formulation And Dosage Form For Increasing Oral Bioavailability Of Hydrophilic Macromolecules

Inventors:
Liang Dong - Sunnyvale CA, US
Patrick Wong - Burlingame CA, US
Vu Nguyen - San Jose CA, US
Si-Hong Yum - Belmont CA, US
Anthony Chao - Cupertino CA, US
Peter Daddona - Menlo Park CA, US
International Classification:
A61K038/28
A61K038/21
A61K038/43
A61K031/715
A61K038/13
US Classification:
424/085700, 424/094100, 514/012000, 514/003000, 514/054000, 514/011000
Abstract:
The present invention includes a formulation and dosage form for enhancing the bioavailability of orally administered hydrophilic macromolecules. The formulation of the present invention includes a permeation enhancer, a hydrophilic macromolecule, and a carrier that exhibits in-situ gelling properties, such as a nonionic surfactant. The formulation of the present invention is delivered within the GI tract as a liquid having at least some affinity for the surface of the GI mucosal membrane. Once released, it is believed that the liquid formulation spreads across one or more areas of the surface of the GI mucosal membrane, where the carrier of the formulation then transitions into a bioadhesive gel in-situ. As a bioadhesive gel, the formulation of the present invention presents the hydrophilic macromolecule and the permeation enhancer at the surface of the GI mucosal membrane at concentrations sufficient to increase absorption of the hydrophilic macromolecule through the GI mucosal membrane over a period of time. The dosage form of the present invention incorporates the formulation of the present invention and may be designed to provide the controlled release of the formulation within the GI tract over a desired period of time.

Formulation & Dosage Form For The Controlled Delivery Of Therapeutic Agents

View page
US Patent:
20030232078, Dec 18, 2003
Filed:
Dec 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/324239
Inventors:
Liang Dong - Sunnyvale CA, US
Patrick Wong - Burlingame CA, US
Steve Espinal - Mountain View CA, US
Vu Nguyen - San Jose CA, US
International Classification:
A61K031/522
A61K031/198
A61K009/22
A61K031/155
US Classification:
424/468000, 514/263360, 514/567000, 514/635000
Abstract:
The present invention includes a formulation and controlled release dosage form that enable the controlled release of therapeutic agents showing reduced absorption in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The formulation of the present invention includes a therapeutic agent that exhibits greater absorption in the upper GI tract than in the lower GI tract and a permeation enhancer, which serves to increase absorption of the therapeutic agent in the lower GI tract. The formulation of the present invention further includes a carrier that allows the formulation to transition to a bioadhesive gel in-situ after the formulation is dispensed within the GI tract and has had some opportunity to reach the surface of the GI mucosal membrane. The bioadhesive gel formed by the formulation of the present invention works to present effective concentrations of both the therapeutic agent and the permeation enhancer at the surface of the GI mucosal membrane over a period. The controlled release dosage form of the present invention is designed to deliver the formulation of the present invention at a desired release rate or release rate profile over a desired period of time.
