Pen-Based Interface For A Notepad Computer

View page
US Patent:
6337698, Jan 8, 2002
Filed:
Nov 20, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/196100
Inventors:
Douglas Alan Young - Mountain View CA
Andrew James Palay - Mountain View CA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
345823, 345777, 345779
Abstract:
The invention is a notepad computer with a page display region displaying a page of a document on which a user can write using a pen or stylus type writing tool. Associated with the page is an interface that can be used with the pen. The interface includes a core task tool region adjacent to the page where tool icons are partially visible until the pen is brought near one of the icons. The tool icon becomes fully visible when the pen is within the region of the icon. The tool when activated can pop-up a radial pop-up menu located at an edge of the document where all the menu choices are located in a semi-circle away from the edge so that the users hand while holding the pen and making a selection does not block the choices. A page flipping tool is located in a corner of the page and is an explicit two-stroke menu allowing selection of a next or previous page. A page scrolling tool is located along an edge of the page, the scrolling tool when activated is an implicit button allowing scrolling in one implied direction.

System Method, And Computer Program Product For Compositing True Colors And Intensity-Maped Colors Into A Frame Buffer

US Patent:
6611274, Aug 26, 2003
Filed:
Oct 12, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/416055
Inventors:
Leroy B. Keely - Portola Valley CA
Andrew J. Palay - Mountain View CA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G09G 502
US Classification:
345600, 345589, 345597, 345605, 345545, 345547, 345549, 3483931, 3483941, 3483951, 3484031, 3484201, 382162, 382167, 382232, 382237, 382274, 382245
Abstract:
The color of a pixel is represented in a pixel storage word, wherein color coordinate data and intensity data are coded separately in two fields of the pixel storage word, the color field and the intensity field. This permits a range of colors to be represented in a relatively small number of bits. In one embodiment of the invention, each of the three color coordinates of an input color is coded separately. The coded color components are concatenated and placed in a coded color field of the pixel storage word. In another embodiment of the invention, the color coordinate data is encoded as a color index, a binary value which maps to color coordinate data according to a predefined color table. Intensity data is also encoded with a binary value. The coded intensity can represent the intensity directly, or can be an index to intensity data stored in a predetermined intensity table.

G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707706, 707712, 707769, 707802
Abstract:
A database engine embedded within a browser implements a system that facilitates managing client-side data for web-based applications. During operation, the system receives a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) at the browser. The system then retrieves a web-page associated with the URL. Next, the system executes a script associated with the web-page. While executing this script, the system receives a request to open a database. In response to this request, the system uses the database engine to open a database associated with the web-page, wherein the database engine is embedded in the browser. The system then uses the database engine to execute database commands.

Abstract:
One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that extends a scripting language native to a web browser to facilitate executing scripts within a web browser. During operation, the system receives a first command from a root script to initialize a first worker script within a web browser. In response to the first command, the system: creates a first operating-system thread, wherein the first operating-system thread is associated with a first message queue; starts a first worker script-engine using the first operating-system thread; receives a first message at the first message queue to execute the first worker script; and in response to the first message, executes the first worker script within the first worker script-engine.
