View page
US Patent:
20130096720, Apr 18, 2013
Filed:
Oct 17, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/274835
Inventors:
Thomas M. Brey - Cary NC, US
Vinod Kamath - Raleigh NC, US
Jason A. Matteson - Raleigh NC, US
Billy W. Medlin - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G05D 23/00
US Classification:
700276
Abstract:
A computer-implemented method comprises accessing historical operating data for a unit of information technology equipment, wherein the historical operating data includes power consumption, fan speed, inlet air temperature, workload, and any processor throttling events at various points in time. The method further comprises receiving user input selecting a fan speed, and using the historical operating data to determine a performance impact that is expected from operating the unit at the selected fan speed, where the power consumption is a proxy for performance. The estimated performance impact of the selected fan speed and one or more alternative fan speeds is then displayed.

Modifying The Spatial Orientation Of A Thermal Acoustic Panel Of A Computing Enclosure Rack

View page
US Patent:
20130229771, Sep 5, 2013
Filed:
Mar 1, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/409267

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
US Classification:
36167954
Abstract:
Methods, apparatuses, and computer program products for modifying the spatial orientation of a thermal acoustic panel of a computing enclosure rack are provided. Embodiments include receiving, by a configuration controller, a configuration preference from a user; identifying, by the configuration controller, a spatial orientation configuration corresponding to the configuration preference received from the user; and coordinating, by the configuration controller, movement of the thermal acoustic panel relative to a body of the computing enclosure rack in accordance with the identified spatial orientation configuration.

Method And Apparatus To Attenuate Vibrations From An Air Mover Assembly

View page
US Patent:
20120164007, Jun 28, 2012
Filed:
Dec 23, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/978224
Inventors:
Eric T. Gamble - Raleigh NC, US
Kenton C. Green - Cary NC, US
Billy W. Medlin - Cary NC, US
Matthew L. Nickerson - Raleigh NC, US
Assignee:
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION - Armonk NY
International Classification:
F01D 25/04
US Classification:
417363
Abstract:
A reduced-vibration air mover assembly comprises a first blade housing to support a first motor housing and a first motor through a first set of struts, the first motor rotatably coupled to a first blade, and a second blade housing to support a second motor housing and a second motor through a second set of struts, the second motor rotatably coupled to a second blade, and a layer of damping material having a first surface adhered to at least one of the first motor housing, the first set of struts and the first blade housing, and a second surface adhered to at least one of the second motor housing, the second set of struts and the second blade housing. A method of reducing vibration transfer to a computer chassis comprises adhesively securing a layer of damping material intermediate a first air mover and a second air mover.
