Damping Mechanism For A Marine Propeller

View page
US Patent:
7387554, Jun 17, 2008
Filed:
Jul 18, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/488359
Inventors:
John W. Behara - Stillwater OK, US
Darrin L. Doty - Stillwater OK, US
Assignee:
Brunswick Corporation - Lake Forest IL
International Classification:
B63H 23/34
B63H 5/125
US Classification:
440 83, 440 55
Abstract:
A transmission for a marine propulsion device is provided with a movable member that responds to relative rotational movement between it and a driving shaft with an axial movement relative to the driving shaft and to a driven component. This axial movement is directed against one of two spring components which resist the axial movement. During the compression of either of the spring components, rotation of the driven component is non-synchronous with the driving component during a brief period of time. Also, the driven component is decoupled at least partially from torque transmitting relation with the driving component during the axial movement of the movable member relative to the driving and driven components.

Cooling System For A Marine Propulsion Device

View page
US Patent:
7393253, Jul 1, 2008
Filed:
Jul 21, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/491464
Inventors:
Robert W. Clifford - Stillwater OK, US
Darrin L. Doty - Stillwater OK, US
Robert L. Burrell - Stillwater OK, US
Assignee:
Brunswick Corporation - Lake Forest IL
International Classification:
F01P 3/20
US Classification:
440 88C
Abstract:
A conduit is configured to facilitate the assembly of a gear case to a driveshaft housing of a sterndrive marine propulsion device while maintaining the proper position of the conduit and assuring proper sealing when the gear case is attached to the driveshaft housing. An alignment protrusion extends from a central portion of the conduit to facilitate the proper positioning of the conduit in relation to the driveshaft housing prior to the attachment of the gear case to the driveshaft housing. A flared portion of a lower end of the conduit is shaped to facilitate the insertion of an outlet of a water pump into the conduit, wherein the water pump is attached to the gear case prior to assembly of the gear case to the driveshaft housing.

Shutter Valve For A Marine Engine

View page
US Patent:
57919534, Aug 11, 1998
Filed:
Jan 23, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/786864
Inventors:
Dennis R. Gunderson - Stillwater OK
Matthew W. Jaeger - Stillwater OK
Arthur L. Barker - Stillwater OK
Charles E. Wright - Stillwater OK
Darrin L. Doty - Stillwater OK
Kenneth C. Grainger - Stillwater OK
Assignee:
Brunswick Corporation - Lake Forest IL
International Classification:
F01N 300
US Classification:
440 89
Abstract:
A shutter valve construction for the exhaust system of a marine engine that discharges exhaust underwater. The valve construction includes an adaptor having an annular body that is adapted to be engaged in the end of an exhaust pipe. Opposite sides of the body are provided with outwardly projecting bosses which are received within holes in the exhaust pipe to position the adaptor relative to the pipe. The valve construction also includes a butterfly-type shutter valve that consists of a pair of valve members which are hinged to a hinge pin that is removably connected to the adaptor. To connect the valve to the adaptor, the ends of the hinge pin extend into opposed openings in the body of the adaptor and receive resilient grommets.

High Capacity Simplified Sea Water Pump

View page
US Patent:
56605366, Aug 26, 1997
Filed:
Jan 5, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/583714
Inventors:
Michael A. Karls - Hilbert WI
Matthew W. Jaeger - Stillwater OK
George E. Brown - Perkins OK
Darrin L. Doty - Stillwater OK
Bruce A. Schroeder - Stillwater OK
Assignee:
Brunswick Corporation - Lake Forest IL
International Classification:
F04C 500
F04C 1300
F04C 1500
US Classification:
418 15
Abstract:
A sea water pump (130) for a marine propulsion system includes a housing (130) having a generally cylindrical pumping chamber (134) defined by a generally cylindrical sidewall (136) extending axially between opposite end walls (138 and 140). A multi-vaned rotary impeller (44) in the chamber is driven by an impeller shaft (28) extending axially into the chamber through one of the endwalls (40). An intake port (146) at the other endwall (140) has a first branch (148) providing radial flow (170, 172) into the chamber, and a second branch (154) providing axial flow (178) into the chamber. A discharge port (158) has a first branch (160) receiving radial flow (174, 176) out of the chamber, and a second branch (166) receiving axial flow (180) out of the chamber. The housing (132) is an integrally molded one-piece cup-shaped unit including the cylindrical sidewall (136) integral with an end cap (144) providing a flat inner wall wear surface (140) providing the noted endwall engaging an axial end (50) of the impeller in sealing sliding relation.
