Abstract:
A system facilitates handover of a wireless transmit and receive unit (WTRU) between a cellular network and a wireless local area network (WLAN). The WLAN communicates with a cellular network. A location of the WTRU is determined. The coverage areas of the WLAN and cellular network are determined. The WTRU is informed of the existence of the WLAN when the WTRU approaches the coverage area of the WLAN. The WTRU is handed over from the cellular network to the WLAN when the WTRU is in the coverage area of the WLAN and vice versa.

Abstract:
A method and system for wireless mobile unit communication within a wireless network having geographic areas for preferred communication usage is provided. An estimated geographic location of a mobile unit is determined. The mobile unit is provided with relative position data of at least one preferred communication area relative to the determined mobile unit estimated location. The mobile unit is then relocated to a preferred communication area based on the relative position data. Preferably, a request for a pre-designated preferred communication area location is initiated by a mobile unit transmission and received by a network base station. The mobile unit can be equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) to determine the mobile unit's estimated location. Transmission of estimated location data can be dependent upon whether the mobile unit or the network calculates relative position data.

A wireless network provides controlled wireless communications with multi-mode wireless WTRUs. The wireless network has at least one base station having a transceiver operating in an infrastructure communication mode with multi mode WTRUs and a controller that transmits control signals via infrastructure communications with a WTRU that control peer-to-peer mode communications of that WTRU with other WTRUs. Abstract:
In one aspect of the invention signal/control messages are embedded as packets in the payloads of SMS messages. The SMS messages are transmitted in a cellular network employing SMPP protocol. SMS messages intended to traverse an TCP/IP network are introduced to the TCP/IP network employing ICMP protocol. The protocol conversions are performed by a message center (MC), such as a SMS center or an SGSN in a cellular network or a WLAN Access Router when the SMS message is forwarded to a WLAN. The SMS messages are typically created by a mobile user, which is also capable of receiving the SMS messages having a signal/control message in the SMS message payload.

Abstract:
A mobile unit includes a handset and a removable storage module having a unique storage module identity, for storing information specific to a user, including an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Additional information regarding a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) and International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) which uniquely identifies the subscriber is also stored in the removable storage module. Upon successfully camping on a cell of a mobile network, the IP address is forwarded to an IP-based network capable of communicating with the mobile unit. In an alternate embodiment, the mobile unit has multi-network capabilities which allow it to communicate with an IP-based network and a cellular network at the same time. In another embodiment, existing cellular network services for the mobile unit having multi-network capabilities are routed through the IP-based network.
