Method For Use Of Transaction Media Encoded With Write-And-Destroy Entries

View page
US Patent:
6386446, May 14, 2002
Filed:
Dec 17, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/213919
Inventors:
Maria Azua Himmel - Austin TX
Herman Rodriguez - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Cirporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06K 500
US Classification:
235380, 235375
Abstract:
A system and method for using write-and-destroy transaction cards which cannot be reprogrammed. The write-and-destroy transaction cards are programmed (i. e. , written to) at bit increments representing, in total, the stated value of the card. The stated value may be represented in one or a plurality of denominations and currencies. In use, the remaining value of a card can be ascertained at a merchant location by reading those bits which have not been erased. The remaining value can additionally be confirmed by contacting the issuing financial institution using a unique serial number which may be encoded onto each transaction card. Upon confirmation that the card has sufficient value to conduct the desired transaction, the card is decremented by erasure of the bits representing that value. By invocation of locally stored software, or based upon communication with a host location, the current rate of currency exchange between the merchant-preferred currency and the currency represented at bit increments on the transaction card can be ascertained and the appropriate value decremented by erasure from the card. Once bits have been erased, they cannot be reprogrammed.

US Patent:
6405222, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Dec 17, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/213842
Inventors:
Edward Lawrence Kunzinger - Round Rock TX

International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
7075011, 707513, 345793
Abstract:

A set of bookmarked web pages in a browser interface are concurrently displaying a list of bookmarks in the interface, each bookmark associated with a respective one of the web pages. At least a subset of the web pages are displayed in a cascade of windows, each web page assigned to a respective window in the cascade in the order in which the associated bookmark is listed in the list of bookmarks. Each window in the cascade is arranged so that a title bar is visible and the alphanumeric content of the title bar can be easily related to an entry in the bookmark list.

Bookmark Set Creation According To User Selection Of Selected Pages Satisfying A Search Condition

View page
US Patent:
6408316, Jun 18, 2002
Filed:
Dec 17, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/213844
Inventors:
Maria Azua Himmel - Austin TX
Kelvin Roderick Lawrence - Round Rock TX
Herman Rodriguez - Austin TX
Jay Allen Tunkel - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1500
US Classification:
7075011, 707 10, 7071041, 709245, 709203, 345760
Abstract:
A bookmark set is created from search results. First, a search request from a client browser is sent for pages in a distributed database which satisfy a search condition. A set of pages which satisfy the search condition are returned. In the page which presents the search results, each page is associated with a user input sensitive selection means, such as a checkbox. Responsive to user input, i. e. selection of certain pages, a bookmark set comprised of a path to selected pages is created. The created bookmark set is served as a unit to the client browser.

Remote Access Of Archived Compressed Data Files

View page
US Patent:
6427149, Jul 30, 2002
Filed:
Sep 9, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/393084
Inventors:
Herman Rodriguez - Austin TX, 78730
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707 10, 707101, 709213, 709217, 709219
Abstract:
The method disclosed and a system employing the method provide remote access via a computer network to individual files contained within a multi-file archive file on a computer network file server, such as ZIP files stored on an Internet web server. The method allows a user equipped with a standard web browser to view a listing of the files contained within an archive file prior to actually downloading the archive file. The user can then select one or more files to receive or download, and the web server extracts only the selected files for transmission to the client computer. The method particularly reduces the amount of time, network bandwidth and computer storage necessary to view the file listing, and to download the selected files.

Method And Apparatus For Selective Caching And Cleaning Of History Pages For Web Browsers

View page
US Patent:
6453342, Sep 17, 2002
Filed:
Dec 3, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/204922
Inventors:
Maria Azua Himmel - Austin TX
Herman Rodriguez - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 15167
US Classification:
709213, 709216, 711135
Abstract:
A method and apparatus in a data processing system for selectively caching web information in a cache for a browser. Web content is first retrieved by the browser during a browsing session. The web content is parsed for an indication of how the page should be stored. The web content is then stored using the indication. For example, retrieved web content may be parsed for an indication that the web content is to be removed after the browsing session terminates. Responsive to identifying the indication, the web content is cleared from the cache in response to the browsing session terminating.

Calendar-Based Power Management

View page
US Patent:
6457132, Sep 24, 2002
Filed:
Jun 30, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/343626
Inventors:
Kenneth Wayne Borgendale - Austin TX
Herman Rodriguez - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 132
US Classification:
713320
Abstract:
Upon creation of an event or activity entry within a calendar, the user is prompted to specify a power management mode to associate with the entry if the entry is not of a predefined type. Predefined entry types may be associated with default power management modes which the user may modify. When an event or activity entry associated with a non-null power management mode is reached, the calendar sends a power management event notification to the power manager, which responds appropriately. Thus, a user may specify that the system, if powered on, should automatically shut down for the duration of a planned vacation identified by an entry within the calendar. The system may thus distinguish between events during which the user is unavailable (e. g. , on a business trip or at a remote meeting) from events during which the user is available but perhaps not actively using the system for a period. The calendar event power management modes complement and refine the preconfigured system power management schemes to take into account the users schedule of activities.

Method And System For Rating Bookmarks In A Web Browser

US Patent:
6480852, Nov 12, 2002
Filed:
Dec 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/210090
Inventors:
Maria Azua Himmel - Austin TX
Herman Rodriguez - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707 10, 707 4, 707 9, 709223, 709245
Abstract:
A bookmark display method executable in a computer system having a processor, a display and a browser. The display method begins by associating a rating with a given bookmark entry (e. g. , a bookmark or bookmark set) and then storing the bookmark entry with the rating. Upon a subsequent request to display the browsers bookmarks, the given bookmark entry is displayed with a user-selectable visual cue. Moreover, access to the given bookmark entry may be selectively inhibited if the bookmark rating has a given property. Bookmark rating values defined at a server also may be selectively displayed, modified and managed.
