Laparoscopic/Thorascopic Support Device

View page
US Patent:
6358198, Mar 19, 2002
Filed:
May 16, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/571236
Inventors:
John M. Levin - Narberth PA, 19072
Matthew Wallash Levin - Narberth PA, 19072
International Classification:
A61F 200
US Classification:
600 37
Abstract:
A laparoscopic/thorascopic support device is described that engages and supports a body part in a non-traumatic manner while it is being acted upon by a surgical instrument. The support device is capable of lifting or otherwise moving a body part into a desired position to be operated upon or isolated from another body part. The support device includes an insertion device that punctures a covering of a body tissue to provide a passageway for access to the desired body part and a catheter. The catheter extends through the passageway and engages and temporarily supports the desired body part in a non-traumatic manner. The catheter (or manipulating device) includes a shaft made of a material that is sufficiently flexible to bend to a desired straight or curved orientation and is sufficiently rigid to maintain the desired orientation. According to the preferred embodiments of the invention, a distal end of the shaft bends about the desired body part to form a loop and secure the desired part within the loop. Preferably, the catheter also includes an eyelet on the shaft that retains the distal end of the shaft, and a first balloon located at the distal end that is directed through a central passage of the eyelet and is expanded to lock the catheter about the desired body part.

Protective Bandages Including Force-Transmission-Impeding Members Therein

View page
US Patent:
6384294, May 7, 2002
Filed:
Jul 13, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/615211
Inventors:
John M. Levin - Narberth PA, 19072
International Classification:
A61F 1300
US Classification:
602 41, 602 42, 602 43, 602 44, 602 45, 602 46, 602 47
Abstract:
Protective bandages in accordance with this invention include an anchoring strip having a protective layer on a lower surface thereof for overlying a desired area on a persons skin. Force-transmission-impeding means is provided on the side of the anchoring strip opposed to the side including the protective layer. The force-transmission-impeding means includes a top sheet adhered adjacent peripheral edges thereof to an upper surface of the anchoring strip to define an internal compartment between the anchoring strip and the top sheet. A compressive cushioning member is provided within the internal compartment for absorbing compressive forces, and low friction, relatively movable confronting surfaces are provided within the internal compartment spaced from the upper surface of the anchoring strip to absorb shear forces imposed upon the bandage. In certain embodiments of this invention, two pairs of low friction, relatively movable confronting surfaces are provided, whereas in another embodiment of this invention only one pair of low friction, relatively movable confronting surfaces is provided.

Electrosurgical Instrument With Separate Cutting And Coagulating Members

View page
US Patent:
6551313, Apr 22, 2003
Filed:
May 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/847119
Inventors:
John M. Levin - Narberth PA, 19072
International Classification:
A61B 1818
US Classification:
606 45, 606 47, 606 48, 606 49, 606 50
Abstract:
An electrosurgical instrument having a working end that utilizes a coagulation surface and a cutting surface that can be moved relative to each other and wherein only one of the two surfaces is electrically enabled depending on their relative positions. The user can then depress a switch to activate the electrically enabled surface.

Insulated Surgical Scissors Including Cauterizing Tip

View page
US Patent:
6562035, May 13, 2003
Filed:
Apr 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/837903
Inventors:
John M. Levin - Narberth PA, 19072
International Classification:
A61B 1818
US Classification:
606 45, 49 50
Abstract:
An insulated surgical scissors including a cauterizing tip that permits a surgeon the ability to mechanically cut tissue that is purchased between the cutting blades of the scissors and to apply a cauterization current to a precise portion of the seized tissue, thereby minimizing inadvertent burning of surrounding tissue. Both monopolar and bipolar configurations of the insulated surgical scissors are provided.

Chronic Peritoneal Dialysis Sac

View page
US Patent:
6569130, May 27, 2003
Filed:
Apr 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/833288
Inventors:
John M. Levin - Narberth PA, 19072
International Classification:
A61M 3100
US Classification:
60428801, 604 29
Abstract:
An internal peritoneal dialysis prosthesis and method employing an abdominal sac adapted to be retained in the abdominal region of a patients body and including dialysate therein for permitting unconcentrated urine within the peritoneal region to pass through a semi-permeable membrane wall of the abdominal sac. The unconcentrated urine within the abdominal sac is directed for subsequent excretion from the patients body via a reservoir in liquid communication with the abdominal sac. In a preferred embodiment, the abdominal sac includes a central region and lobes of semi-permeable membrane extending from the central region. The lobes are constructed to preferably extend between folds of bowel and mesentery to increase the interface area between the sac and abdomen, and maximize diffusion and ultrafiltration of urine from the mesenteric parentis and peritoneum.

Prosthesis For Continuous Internal Peritoneal Dialysis And Continuous Method Of Providing Peritoneal Dialysis

View page
US Patent:
6613095, Sep 2, 2003
Filed:
Oct 20, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/693591
Inventors:
John M. Levin - Penn Valley PA, 19072
International Classification:
A61F 204
US Classification:
623 2365, 604 29
Abstract:
Continuous internal peritoneal dialysis prosthesis and method employing an abdominal sac adapted to be retained in the abdominal region of a patients body and including dialyzate therein for permitting unconcentrated urine within the peritoneal region to pass through a semi-permeable membrane wall of the abdominal sac. The unconcentrated urine within the abdominal sac is directed through a section of the patients bowel and is communicated with the internal wall of the bowel to thereby concentrate the urine. The concentrated urine is then directed into the urinary bladder for subsequent excretion from the patients body. In the preferred prosthesis and method of this invention the normal breathing pattern of the patient is employed to assist in the circulation of the unconcentrated urine from the abdominal sac into and through the section of the patients bowel. In alternative embodiments, the dialyzate may be contained within the abdominal sac, contained within the prosthesis, or allowed to directly contact the peritoneum.

Fluid Delivery System

View page
US Patent:
6629950, Oct 7, 2003

International Classification:
A61M 1100
US Classification:
604 9301
Abstract:
A fluid delivery system that is implantable in the body for delivering treatment fluids to a person. The delivery system includes a fluid-containing sack positioned in the body which is responsive to internal pressure changes resulting from the breathing pattern of the person. The delivery system also includes a fluid delivery conduit which communicates with the sack through a one-way valve. The conduit is provided for directing treatment fluid out of the delivery system in response to the breathing pattern of a patient and delivering the treatment fluid to a desired region of the persons body in repetitive dosages over a sustained period of time.
