System And Method For Decreasing Ratio Changing Time By Actuating Inertia Brake While The Master Clutch Is Engaged In Electronically Enhanced Powertrain Systems

View page
US Patent:
58423761, Dec 1, 1998
Filed:
Jan 17, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/784985
Inventors:
John Dresden - Farmington Hills MI
Thomas A. Genise - Dearborn MI
Simon Hornby - Bolton Lancashire, GB2
Ronald K. Markyvech - Allen Park MI
Richard A. Nellums - Farmington Hills MI
John E. Stainton - Chorley, GB2
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16H 5900
F16H 6100
F16D 6700
US Classification:
74336R
Abstract:
A system and method for decreasing the time required to complete a ratio change in an electronically enhanced powertrain system is provided. The powertrain system includes a number of devices for providing a retarding torque to engine rotation to increase the decay rate of the engine speed during an upshift. These devices include an engine brake and an input shaft brake. A retarding torque is also provided by increasing engine accessory load by controlling various engine accessories such as a cooling fan, an air compressor, a hydraulic pump, an air conditioning compressor, and an alternator.

Dual Pressure Pressure Regulator

View page
US Patent:
51860660, Feb 16, 1993
Filed:
Jan 23, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/824960
Inventors:
William R. Pankratz - Royal Oak MI
Thomas A. Genise - Dearborn MI
John Dresden - Farmington Hills MI
Ronald K. Markyvech - Allen Park MI
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16H 5900
US Classification:
74335
Abstract:
An auxiliary transmission section (14) shift control system (230)/method is provided which includes a control member (234) to prevent auxiliary section synchronized clutch (92, 128) damage if the main transmission section (12) is engaged during an auxiliary section shift. Upon sensing main section engagement during a shift into the auxiliary section high-speed ratio, the force used to engage the high speed ratio is reduced from a first to a considerably lower second level by reducing the pressurization of the actuating pressurized fluid. To accomplish this, a dual pressure pressure regulator assembly (234) is utilized.

Articulation Angle Sensor

View page
US Patent:
51525445, Oct 6, 1992
Filed:
Dec 20, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/454096
Inventors:
Joseph B. Dierker - Southfield MI
Thomas A. Gee - Allen Park MI
John Dresden - Farmington Hills MI
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B60T 712
B62D 5306
US Classification:
280432
Abstract:
Sensors (170, 172) for sensing articulation angle (AA) and/or a time derivative thereof (dAA/dt, d. sup. 2 AA/dt. sup. 2) for a trailer anti-swing control system are provided. In the preferred embodiments, at least the active transducers of the sensors are mounted to the tractor (12) subvehicle of the articulated vehicle system (10).
