Workpiece Holddown System For Machine Tools

View page
US Patent:
6419216, Jul 16, 2002
Filed:
Jul 7, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/611884
Inventors:
Kenneth J. Susnjara - Birdseye IN
Assignee:
Thermwood Corporation - Dale IN
International Classification:
B25B 1100
US Classification:
269 21, 269296
Abstract:
A working hold-down system for a worktable of a machine tool having a wall member for supporting the workpiece, defining a plenum connectable to a vacuum source; a surface portion cooperable with the workpiece and a seal, defining a zone; a passageway intercommunicating the plenum with the zone; and a valve disposed in the passageway. In operation, the vacuum source generates a vacuum in the plenum connected to the zone by the passageway to hold down the workpiece on the worktable. The system further includes a fixture connectable to the wall member via the vacuum source having a surface that is cooperable with workpiece and the seal defining the zone. For large, flat workpieces, a porous spoilboard replaces the supporting wall member to create a universal hold-down system.

Pneumatic Clamping Apparatus And Method Thereof

US Patent:
6470942, Oct 29, 2002
Filed:
Oct 12, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/686912
Inventors:
Kenneth J. Susnjara - Birdseye IN
Assignee:
Thermwood Corporation - Dale IN
International Classification:
B30B 502
US Classification:
156381, 1565833, 100211, 269 21, 269 22
Abstract:
The present invention is designed to effectively band ornamental trims onto panel edges, such as those of furniture tops. The present invention utilizes pneumatic forces to hold the ornamental trims against the panel edges instead of traditional clamps, resulting in asserting a uniform pressure press-fitting the trims against the panel edges along a good length of the trims instead of merely along several points of the trims. furthermore, since the contacting surface of the present invention is made of a soft material, it would not leave any pressmarks or indentations on the trims as can left by a hardened clamp.

Method Of Locating A Workpiece On A Computer Numeric Controlled Machining System

View page
US Patent:
6480757, Nov 12, 2002
Filed:
Feb 17, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/505728
Inventors:
Kenneth J. Susnjara - Birdseye IN
Assignee:
Thermwood Corporation - Dale IN
International Classification:
G06F 1900
US Classification:
700159, 451 5, 451 8, 451 9, 451 10, 451 11, 702 94, 702 95, 702158, 409144, 409218, 409220
Abstract:
This invention converts a toolhead of a computer numerical controlled machine into a locating fence by installing a fence guard on the toolhead. Since there is an indexing program in a computer numerical controlled machine to monitor a real time location of a spindle relative to a worktable, the true location of the locating fence can be easily obtained by adding an offset value indicative of the characteristic of the fence guard to numerical data indicative of the real time location of the spindle.

Abstract:
The present invention is a workpiece holding device. The device should be shaped in a configuration tailored to the workpieces that are to be held together or dispersed. The device should have a flow channel that would transmit hydraulic force being applied to the device so as to either retain or disperse workpieces adjacent to the device.
