Citation Selection And Routing Feature For Hand-Held Content Display Device

View page
US Patent:
6356287, Mar 12, 2002
Filed:
May 28, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/086249
Inventors:
Mary Ruberry - Sunnyvale CA
Martin F. Eberhard - Woodside CA
Marc E. Tarpenning - Palo Alto CA
Lance Uyehara - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Nuvomedia, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06K 1500
US Classification:
345864, 345863
Abstract:
An electronic reading system is disclosed which allows users to download books and other types of content to a hand-held reader device for viewing. Using software which runs on a personal computer (PC), the user can download titles from Internet sites to the PC. Titles are then automatically transferred to the device when the device is placed in a cradle which is connected to the PC. Using the devices touch-sensitive display and graphical user interface, the user can access various software-implemented features associated with the display and management of the content. One feature is a user-definable hotkey that can be âdragged and droppedâ onto a menu item to create a shortcut to that item. Another feature allows the user to tap twice on a displayed word to cause the device to look the word up in a pre-specified or default reference title, such as a dictionary or an encyclopedia. Another feature allows the user to block a passage on the touch-sensitive display and then specify one or more destinations (email addresses, file folders, fax numbers, printers, etc.

Certificate Handling For Digital Rights Management System

View page
US Patent:
6513117, Jan 28, 2003
Filed:
Oct 7, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/168351
Inventors:
Marc Tarpenning - Palo Alto CA
Ben Kavanah - San Francisco CA
Brian Slesinsky - San Francisco CA
Assignee:
Gemstar Development Corporation - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
G06F 0124
US Classification:
713156, 380252
Abstract:
A delivery system for managing security keys uses three key pairs to establish, register, move and revoke rights in a device to view protected information. The first and second key pairs cooperate to establish a secure certificate containing a device public and private key, and the pairs of keys are manipulated to install the appropriate keys in the device and the associated authentication server without ever exposing the keys. Thereafter, in the event of a need to authorize a new device to view content associated with a prior, authorized device, the key pairs are used to revoke the rights of an old device and establish identical viewing rights in the new device.

US Patent:
8598847, Dec 3, 2013
Filed:
Jan 19, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/009590
Inventors:
Martin Eberhard - Woodside CA, US
Steve Diamond - San Mateo CA, US
Marc Tarpenning - Woodside CA, US
Jessica Riley - Mountain View CA, US
Alexander Barke - Ingolstadt, DE
Manfred Ammler - Ingolstadt, DE

Assignee:
Volkswagen AG - Wolfsburg
Audi AG - Ingolstadt
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
H02J 7/04
H02J 7/16
US Classification:
320126, 320128, 320132, 320134, 320136, 320152
Abstract:
A method for balancing voltage for a multi-cell battery system, in which the battery system includes at least two parallel groups of cells connected in series and in which the parallel group of cells includes at least one battery cell, includes: charging the battery system by keeping the voltage of all parallel groups of cells less than or equal to a second threshold voltage value, while at least the voltage of one group of parallel cells is less than or equal to a first threshold voltage; and while at least the voltage of one group of parallel cells is less than or equal to a second threshold voltage; and while the charging current is above a predefined minimal current. The method further includes measuring the voltage of each parallel group of cells while electrical loads are shut off and dissipating energy in each of the parallel group of cells of the amount that is represented by the voltage difference between the individual parallel group of cells and the parallel group of cells with the lowest voltage.
