View page
US Patent:
7139782, Nov 21, 2006
Filed:
Sep 21, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/945824
Inventors:
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 12/00
US Classification:
707204, 707 1, 707 10, 711162
Abstract:
A remote backup storage system that may be tested with current backup data while the remote system continues to received data from a primary source data storage system includes a remotely located front-end volume that is connected to receive data from a source volume. A remotely located secondary volume normally receives data from the front-end volume. The secondary volume is the volume to which data of the source volume is backed up. The front-end volume serves as buffer for data transferred from the source volume to the secondary volume. A third volume that is used to preserve or restore the data in the secondary volume during a test.

US Patent:
7146462, Dec 5, 2006
Filed:
Mar 18, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/804942
Inventors:
Hirofumi Nagasuka - Sagamihara, JP
Katsuhisa Miyata - Yokohama, JP
Masaru Satou - Yokohama, JP
Kenichi Oyamada - Yokohama, JP
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 13/10
US Classification:
711114
Abstract:
A computer system includes a host computer, a disk control device controlling operation of a storage sub-system, and a management server managing configuration of the storage sub-system. The host computer registers the result of grouping of a plurality or volumes in the storage sub-system according to a use purpose in a volume management table including a volume identifier, a physical address, and a group identifier allocated in the disk control unit. During access to the volume via the host, the disk control unit obtains the physical address belonging to a storage belonging to a group identical to the group input via the host, notifies information described on the volume list of the storage allocated at the physical address to the management server, and causes the server to display the information.

Method And Apparatus For Cryptographic Conversion In A Data Storage System

View page
US Patent:
7162647, Jan 9, 2007
Filed:
Mar 11, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/799086
Inventors:
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
H04L 9/00
US Classification:
713193, 726 2, 713191
Abstract:
When data is encrypted and stored for a long time, encryption key(s) and/or algorithm(s) should be updated so as not to be compromised due to malicious attack. To that end, stored encrypted data is converted in the storage system with new set of cryptographic criteria. During this process, read and write requests can be serviced.

Method Of Assuring Data Integrity On Storage Volumes

View page
US Patent:
7188230, Mar 6, 2007
Filed:
Feb 15, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/058808
Inventors:
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 12/14
G06F 12/16
G06F 11/10
US Classification:
711216, 711152
Abstract:
A method for assuring the integrity of stored data in a storage system is provided. At a specified time at which further writes to a desired portion of the stored data are to be precluded, a hash value is calculated for the desired portion of stored data. At a later time, retrieval of the stored data is performed and the hash value recalculated. A comparison of the former and present hash values reveals whether the data has remained unchanged.

Method And Apparatus For Mirroring Objects Between Storage Systems

US Patent:
7213116, May 1, 2007
Filed:
Mar 24, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/090452
Inventors:
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Manabu Kitamura - Cupertino CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 12/00
US Classification:
711162, 711112
Abstract:
The system is disclosed in which a storage system having data, and meta-data which describes attributes of the data including its address, can copy the data to a secondary system in a more efficient manner. The storage system identifies the blocks which contain the data described in the meta-data, then reads those blocks in the order of their addresses and copies them to the desired target. The method reduces disk access time and thereby speeds copy operations.

Method And Apparatus For Encrypted Remote Copy For Secure Data Backup And Restoration

View page
US Patent:
7383462, Jun 3, 2008
Filed:
Jul 2, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/882432
Inventors:
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Yuichi Yagawa - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
H04K 1/00
H04L 9/32
US Classification:
714 2, 714 7, 714 8, 705 50, 713193, 713194
Abstract:
Data at a primary storage system is encrypted and remote copied to a secondary storage system. A Remote Copy Configuration Information (RCCI) is created that identifies the encryption mechanism, keys, data source volume, and target volume for the remote copy. The RCCI is backed up on a trusted computer system. In one embodiment, the secondary storage system is an off-site data storage system managed by a third party. Upon detection of a failure in the primary storage system, the encrypted data and RCCI are transferred to a tertiary server, which is optionally created upon detection of the failure, and operations of the failed primary server are resumed by the tertiary server. In one embodiment, the failure is detected by loss of a heart beat signal transmitted from the primary storage system to a management server that initiates the transfers to the tertiary server.

Method And Apparatus For Data Storage

US Patent:
7428642, Sep 23, 2008
Filed:
Oct 15, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/965064
Inventors:
Nobuyuki Osaki - Campbell CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi, Ltd. - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 13/00
G06F 12/14
US Classification:
713189, 711111, 711164
Abstract:
An apparatus, system, and method for avoiding unexpected exposure of important data in a storage system include a table that contains permission and conversion information regarding data transfer. When a storage system transfers a certain set of data from one logical device or volume to another area, e. g. , a host, a tape storage or another logical device or volume inside or outside of the storage system, the storage system refers to the table to determine if transfer is permitted and whether conversion of the data is required before transfer. A storage controller converts the data if necessary, and transfers the data to the target destination if permitted. Keys are maintained within the storage system so that the management of securing data is centralized.
