Andrea C. Harriman - Yardely PA, US
Assignee:
General Instrument Corporation - Horsham PA
International Classification:
G06F 9/00
US Classification:
726 12, 726 2, 726 26, 726 27
Abstract:
A system () and method () for delivering conditional access information to a conditional access controlled device () incompatible with the conditional access transmission protocol. The conditional access information is delivered through a conditional access controlled device () compatible with the conditional access transmission protocol via a home network connection () between the conditional access controlled devices and according to a home network transmission protocol with which both conditional access controlled devices are compatible. The device () compatible with the conditional access transmission protocol receives the conditional access information on behalf of the device () incompatible with the conditional access transmission protocol, reformats the received conditional access information according to the home network transmission protocol, and transmits the reformatted information to the device () incompatible with the conditional access transmission protocol according to the home network transmission protocol and via the home network connection ().

Method And Apparatus To Configure, Provision And Control A Set-Top Terminal

View page
US Patent:
20030143946, Jul 31, 2003
Filed:
Jan 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/062784
Inventors:
Richard Grzeczkowski - Yardley PA, US
International Classification:
H04H001/00
US Classification:
455/003050, 455/003010
Abstract:
A method and apparatus to configure, provision and control a set-top terminal using a wireless web appliance is provided where a wireless communications path is established between the wireless web appliance and the set-top terminal. The set-top terminal is arranged to communicate with a headend controller over a bi-directional communication link having both upstream and downstream communication paths. A configuration change is implemented in response to an unsolicited message that is generated by the set-top terminal and received by the headend controller over the upstream communications path. The configuration change is implemented at the headend, or at the set-top terminal by downloading configuration data from the headend controller over the downstream communication path. The set-top terminal transmits the unsolicited message in response to a control signal generated by the wireless web appliance that is received over the wireless communications path.

Methods And Systems For Remotely Accessing A Digital Television Terminal Via A Global Communication Network

View page
US Patent:
20040047599, Mar 11, 2004
Filed:
Sep 5, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/236574
Inventors:
Richard Grzeczkowski - Warrington PA, US
Assignee:
General Instrument Corporation - Horsham PA
International Classification:
H04N005/76
G06F003/00
G06F013/00
US Classification:
386/083000, 725/058000
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods and systems for remotely accessing a digital television terminal via a global communication network. In one example embodiment, a remote device adapted for connection to the digital television terminal via a global communication network is provided. An interface which is downloadable to the remote device via the global communication network enables the remote device to communicate with the digital television terminal. Once the interface is downloaded, the remote device is enabled to remotely access and control the digital television terminal.

Method And Apparatus For Scrolling Television Programming Data On Screen During Program Viewing

US Patent:
20040049784, Mar 11, 2004
Filed:
Sep 6, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/236663
Inventors:
Richard Grzeczkowski - Warrington PA, US
Assignee:
General Instrument Corporation
International Classification:
G06F003/00
H04N005/445
G06F013/00
US Classification:
725/046000, 348/563000, 725/039000, 725/050000, 725/051000
Abstract:
A method for providing programming information available on a broadcast television service displays the programming information in a “stock ticker” format. The set-top box interacts with a user to obtain user preferences regarding the scrolling programming guide and stores the user preferences as a user profile in a set-top box that is coupled to a television display. A programming information server is accessed over a communication link between the set-top box and the programming information server to obtain programming information. The scrolling programming guide is created based on the stored user profile and overlaid on the television screen when activated by the user, preferably in an unobtrusive location, such as the lower portion of the television display.

Method And Apparatus For Delivering Personalized Alerts To Set Top Box Users Without User Intervention

US Patent:
20040049785, Mar 11, 2004
Filed:
Sep 6, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/236664
Inventors:
Richard Grzeczkowski - Warrington PA, US
David Zeidler - Warrington PA, US
Matthias Muller - Line Lexington PA, US
Assignee:
General Instrument Corporation
International Classification:
H04N007/025
H04N007/10
G06F003/00
H04N005/445
G06F013/00
H04N007/173
US Classification:
725/046000, 725/035000, 725/033000, 725/034000
Abstract:
An Alert/Warning Interface resides in a set top box, which is coupled to a user's television, and an Information Server located in the cable plant origination center or head-end. The end user of the set top box is able to configure a profile that includes weather areas to be monitored, roads traveled, and schools their children attend. This profile is stored on the Information Server, along with the profiles of all other users. The Information Server monitors for alert conditions, such as bad weather, traffic jams, and school closings. If any of these events occurs, a message is sent to the set top box associated with a profile indicating the current error condition. Upon receipt of an Alert message, the set top box places an icon (or other graphic) in a predetermined portion of the screen (e.g., a top/bottom corner) indicating an alert has occurred. The user can then switch to the Alert screen view, at which time the Alert icon turns off.

US Patent:
20050198684, Sep 8, 2005
Filed:
Mar 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/795872
Inventors:
Christopher Stone - Newtown PA, US
Richard Grzeczkowski - Warrington PA, US
International Classification:
H04N007/16
H04L005/14
H04N007/173
US Classification:
725111000, 725100000, 725131000, 725139000, 725151000
Abstract:
The present invention is a method and apparatus for providing a DSG to OOB transcoder in a cable television system comprising a legacy set-top device . In the first embodiment, a one-way DSG to OOB transcoder acts as a proxy device for OOB messages to the DSG tunnel . Once an OOB message is generated, the OOB message is transmitted to the DSG tunnel . The DSG to OOB transcoder of the present invention then captures the OOB message, and communicates the OOB message to the legacy set-top device . In a second embodiment of the invention, the legacy set-top device may communicate return communications to the DSG to OOB transcoder by generating a QPSK message. The QPSK message is then translated to an OOB message comprising DOCSIS content.
