US Patent:
6367839, Apr 9, 2002
Filed:
Mar 5, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/263702
Inventors:
Richard V. Langhoff - Greensboro NC
Assignee:
Volvo Trucks North America, Inc. - Greensboro NC
International Classification:
B60R 2228
US Classification:
280751, 5118, 5 91, 297464, 297488, 29619002
Abstract:
A restraint system for protecting occupants in a sleeping compartment of a vehicle having a bunk bed includes at least two flexible straps having one end attached to a selected one of the vehicle or the bunk, and a second end. Attached to the straps is at least one energy absorbent padding in a position relative to the bunk bed for providing restraint and secondary collision protection to a prone occupant. The straps extend from the vehicle over the bunk bed to the second ends. A releasable lock is attached to the second ends for connecting the second ends to the vehicle or bunk. When not in use, the restraint system is conveniently stored so as to provide minimal impact on cab space. A strap retraction means is attached to the vehicle and has the first ends of the straps attached thereto. The strap retraction means is operable to retract the straps when the releasable lock is unlatched whereby the straps collapse into a stored position.

View page
US Patent:
6622822, Sep 23, 2003
Filed:
Aug 1, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/209998
Inventors:
Richard V. Langhoff - Greensboro NC
David M. Glorio - Oak Ridge NC
Assignee:
Volvo Trucks North America, Inc. - Greensboro NC
International Classification:
E04G 300
US Classification:
182 90, 182 93, 182 96, 182127, 5 21
Abstract:
An adjustable ladder with self-storing features and suitable for installation in the sleeping berth of an over-the-highway tractor. The ladder includes an upper and lower member. The upper member includes first and second side rails and at least one step rung rigidly disposed between the side rails. The first side rail includes a mounting end, an open end, and a center portion. One end of the first and second side rails are rotateably mounted to a mating surface. The lower member includes a first end, a second end, and a center portion extending between the first and second ends. The lower member first end is slideably engaged within the upper member open end to define a ladder length. The length is adjustable over a range by sliding the lower member with respect to the upper member. The range may be from an application length to a stored length.

Cushioned Restraint System

View page
US Patent:
7150471, Dec 19, 2006
Filed:
Feb 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/774717
Inventors:
Richard V. Langhoff - Greensboro NC, US
David M. Glorio - Göteborg, SE
Assignee:
Volvo Trucks North America Inc. - Greensboro NC
International Classification:
B60R 21/06
US Classification:
280749, 280751, 297488
Abstract:
An occupant restraint system for protecting occupants in a compartment, such as a cab of a highway tractor or other vehicle. The system includes an interior trim panel having dual uses. The trim panel may be an elongated energy-absorbing element that forms, in a first position, at least a visually integral part of an interior wall of the compartment and, in a second position, a restraint at the front of a bunk for an occupant of the bunk. The restraint system includes a cushioned restraint attached to at least two straps, each strap being also attached to the compartment. In a first position, the cushioned restraint forms a visually integral portion of an interior surface of the compartment, and in a second position, the cushioned restraint is releasably attached to an end of the bunk such that the straps extend over the bunk and an occupant of the bunk is restrained by the cushioned restraint and the straps.

Vehicle Sleeper Bunk Pivotable Between Stored And Deployed Positions Via Extended-Retracted-Extended Flowable-Medium Spring And Method

View page
US Patent:
7735904, Jun 15, 2010
Filed:
Dec 27, 2005
Appl. No.:
12/086816
Inventors:
William Mahoney - Sunset SC, US
Richard Langhoff - Greensboro NC, US
Assignee:
Volvo Group North America, LLC - Greensboro NC
International Classification:
B60N 2/34
B61D 1/08
B63B 29/10
US Classification:
29619002, 105321, 114193
Abstract:
A system for supporting individuals or objects is disclosed that can be used, e. g. , as a bunk for sleeping upon within a vehicle, such as, e. g. , a truck or commercial vehicle. The system preferably includes a support platform, a pivot mechanism, and at least one flowable-medium spring. The support platform is provided with an upper surface to support at least one individual or object within a vehicle. The pivot mechanism is connected to the support platform so as to pivot the support platform around a pivot axis to move between a stored position and a deployed position in which the support platform supports the at least one individual or object. The at least one flowable-medium spring is provided with a first end fixed relative to the vehicle and a second end fixed relative to the support platform at a location displaced from the pivot axis. Each of the at least one flowable-medium springs is arranged so as to impart an extension force that biases the support platform toward the deployed position and so as to impart an extension force that biases the support platform toward the stored position during at least portions of the movement of the support platform between the stored position and the deployed position.
