A card edge connector (10) includes an insulative housing (12) defining a card receiving central slot (14) for receiving a card (200) therein. Two rows of passageways (16) are respectively positioned by two sides of the central slot (14) for receiving a plurality of signal contacts (18) therein, respectively. A corresponding number of grounding contacts (20) are positioned in the same passageways (16) with the signal contacts (18), respectively, in a one-by-one relationship with the signal contact (18) wherein each grounding contact (20) is disposed in a lower and inner position in the corresponding passageway (16) in comparison with the signal contact (18) which shares the same passageway (16). A shorting bar or block (36) is inserted into the cavity (34) from the bottom and a series of grounding pins (42) are side by side arranged along the block (36) longitudinally whereby each grounding pin (42) has two opposite arms (46) for respective engagement with the corresponding pair of grounding contacts (20) positioned in the pair of passageways (16) in the same transverse plane and by two sides of the central slot (14). Each grounding pin (42) further includes a lead (48) extending downward toward the PC board (100) on which the connector (10) is mounted wherein the lead (48) is generally in the mid-position between two tails of the corresponding two signal contacts (18) sharing the same pair of opposite passageways (16) with such pair of grounding contacts (20).

A horizontal type card edge connector (10) includes an elongated insulative housing (12) defining a central slot (14) for receiving a module therein. Two rows of passageways (16) are provided by two sides of the central slot (14) in the housing (12) for receiving therein a corresponding number of contacts (18) which are adapted to be engaged with the corresponding circuit pads on the module. Two end blocks (20) disposed at two opposite ends of the housing (12), extend in both downward and rearward directions to define a space therebetween whereby the right angle type contact tails (30) are positioned in the space. A back shell (70) with an L-shaped cross-sectional configuration is attached to the back side of the housing (12) by two latch devices (76) intergrated therewith for protectively covering all the contact tails (30), wherein a horizontal wall (74) and a vertical wall (72) of the back shell (70) are respectively supported by top edge sections (81) and back edge sections (80) of the end blocks (20).

A chip carrier socket assembly (10) for electrical connecting leads (81) on a chip carrier (80) to a board on which the socket is seated, comprises a base (20) having a chip carrier receiving opening (22) in relation to peripheral walls (24) thereof. A plurality of lower contacts (70) are disposed in the base (20) for electrical connecting to the respective printed circuit board pads. The socket (10) further includes a cover (40) complementarily positioned on the base (20). The cover (40) has therethrough a central opening corresponding to the opening (22) of the base (20) and surrounded by circumferential walls (44). A corresponding plurality of upper contacts (60) are disposed in the cover (40) for mechanically pressing against and electrically connecting to the leads (81) of the chip carrier (80). The chip carrier (80) can be retained within the cover (40) by means of the upper contacts (60) thereof without regard to the base (20). The upper contacts may connected to the lower contacts so that no other additional securing means are required to lock the cover and the base together.
