Inventors:
Sean A. Sargeant - Westford MA
William H. Gardner - North Easton MA
Assignee:
Duracell Inc - Bethel CT
International Classification:
H01M 202
US Classification:
429164
Abstract:
An end cap assembly is disclosed for sealing the open end of a cylindrical alkaline cell housing preferably having a diameter less than the diameter of AAA size cells. The end cap assembly is preferably intended for sealing AAAA (LR61) size cylindrical alkaline cells. The end cap assembly comprises a terminal end cap, an insulating sealing disk underlying said end cap, and an elongated current collector penetrating through an aperture in said insulating sealing disk. At least a portion of the insulating sealing disk lies within the cell housing to seal the open end thereof. The terminal end cap has a peripheral edge, preferably formed from a curved rib, which is locked within the peripheral edge of the insulating sealing disk. The end cap assembly does not require other metal disks held within the sealing and insulating disk. The insulating disk comprises a discontinuous skirt comprising a plurality of integral legs emanating downwardly into the cell interior from the peripheral edge of said insulating disk.

Assignee:
Duracell Inc. - Bethel CT
International Classification:
H01M 200
H01M 204
H01M 208
US Classification:
429163
The terminal end cap is located outside of said housing. The end cap assembly may include an insulating washer between the terminal end cap and the cell housing. The terminal end cap and the insulating washer are stacked over the peripheral edge of the cell housing at the open end of the cell housing. The insulating washer electrically insulates the terminal end cap from the cell housing.

End Cap Seal Assembly For An Electrochemical Cell

View page
US Patent:
61270628, Oct 3, 2000
Filed:
Mar 24, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/047264
Inventors:
Sean A. Sargeant - Westford MA
William H. Gardner - North Easton MA
John Hession - Braintree MA
Assignee:
Duracell Inc - Bethel CT
International Classification:
H01M 212
US Classification:
429 53
Abstract:
An end cap seal assembly for an electrochemical cell such as an alkaline cell is disclosed. The end cap assembly comprises a convoluted end cap disk which may also function as a cell terminal and an underlying insulating disk also having a convoluted surface. The convoluted end cap disk has a downwardly extending wall with at least one aperture therethrough which preferably faces the ambient environment. The insulating disk has a downwardly extending wall forming a rupturable membrane which underlies and abuts the inside surface of the downwardly extending wall of the end cap. The rupturable membrane underlies and abuts the aperture in the downwardly extending wall of the end cap. When gas pressure within the cell exceeds a predetermined level the rupturable membrane pushes through said aperture and ruptures allowing gas to escape therefrom directly to the environment. A separate terminal plate may be welded to a portion of the top surface of the convoluted end cap. The conductive layer of a film-laminate condition tester may be connected to the terminal plate.

Wavelength-Division Multiplexed Optical Fiber Network

View page
US Patent:
49013068, Feb 13, 1990
Filed:
Dec 5, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/281864
Inventors:
William B. Gardner - Duluth GA
Assignee:
American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell Laboratories - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04B 900
US Classification:
370 3
Abstract:
Disclosed is a dense channel packing wavelength division multiplexed optical fiber communication system that is parsimonious in its cable length requirements and that does not require the presence of widely tunable lasers at the remote terminals. The system comprises a central station and N remote stations (N frequently greater than about 50) connected to the central station by optical fiber means that comprise a "backbone" and l (1

Method Of Determining An Index Of Refraction Profile Of An Optical Fiber

View page
US Patent:
43915167, Jul 5, 1983
Filed:
Sep 11, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/941824
Inventors:
Luther M. Boggs - Dunwoody GA
William B. Gardner - Chamblee GA
Assignee:
Western Electric Co., Inc. - New York NY
Bell Telephone Laboratories, Incorporated - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G01N 2145
US Classification:
356 731
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for determining the index of refraction profile of a stepped or graded index type optical fiber having a core encased within a surrounding cladding. An interferogram is formed with a beam of radiant energy passed transversely through the optical fiber. Fringe line shift is measured at a series of points corresponding to a series of mutually parallel ray chord paths extending through the core at mutually diverse minimum radial distances from the core axis. That portion of the measured fringe line shift attributable to discrete differences in indices of refraction of cylindrical core ring portions of thicknesses defined by successive minimum radial distances in the series of ray paths and that of the cladding is sequentially calculated from the outermost core ring portion inwardly towards the core center.

Coatings For Fiber Waveguides

View page
US Patent:
41474074, Apr 3, 1979
Filed:
Jan 9, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/868043
Inventors:
Bernard R. Eichenbaum - Lilburn GA
William B. Gardner - Atlanta GA
Assignee:
Bell Telephone Laboratories, Incorporated - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G02B 514
US Classification:
350 9634
Abstract:
Microbending loss is reduced and abrasion protection is afforded for optical fibers by relatively thick polymer coatings characterized in part by a preferred elastic tensile modulus and cold flow property. The coating process uses rapid cooling of a liquid application to promote rapid gelation or solidification and thus achieve uniform coating diameter without beading. Fibers so coated are formed into ribbon structures having definite center-to-center fiber spacing. Preparation of coated fibers or ribbon structures for splicing is achieved by solvent stripping of the coating.

Multiport Optical Devices

View page
US Patent:
50509543, Sep 24, 1991
Filed:
Jan 12, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/463730
Inventors:
William B. Gardner - Duluth GA
Jane F. Kuhl - Atlanta GA
Calvin M. Miller - Atlanta GA
Linn F. Mollenauer - Colts Neck NJ
Assignee:
AT&T Bell Laboratories - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G02B 632
G02B 626
US Classification:
385 16
Abstract:
A multi-port optical device for transferring optical signals, or portion of optical signals, from one transmission element to another is disclosed. The inventive optical device comprises a pair of graded index lenses having an interposed Fabry Perot etalon. Moreover, the functionality of the device may be modified by varying the transmission characteristics of the etalon, which may be effected by varying the optical path length of the etalon. In operation, the optical device utilizes the graded index lenses as image transfer lenses between transmission elements wherein wavelength selectivity therebetween is afforded by the filtering mechanism associated with the etalon. The optical device may be used as a wavelength multiplexer or as an optical splitter. Moreover, by utilizing a piezoelectric transducer, the optical device may be converted to operate as an optical switch.
